'The walk was very well balanced, about the right length with enough information but not too long having to stand in one place.'     Arthur, Bristol

BRISTOL OLD CITY WALK

The city grew up surrounded by water; the River Avon on one side and the River Frome on another two sides; and being a safe port it soon become the second trading port for England after London.  Trading with the near continent, Iceland and the Baltic, the port was always busy.

This walk takes in the rivers, the old residential area which became the financial heart of the city.  Bristol is still a centre for financial services, but many of the companies have moved to larger premises outside the central city area.  We shall see some of the few remaining 17th century buildings (including the Llandoger Trow - inspiration for The Admiral Benbow in Treasure Island), dock-side buildings and regeneration after the port of Bristol moved to Avonmouth.

Visit Queen Square, named after Queen Anne who visited the city in 1702, the second largest town square in England after Lincolns Inn in London. Find out what caused the riots here in October 1831 and the location of the first American Consulate in Britain, established in 1792.
